Have you played Paradigm yet?
/Paradigm is our new favorite video game! If you haven’t tried it, go check it out on Steam
We interviewed the creator, Jacob Janerka of Kill Pretty…heres a little bit from the interview…
KP: I grew up with Sam and Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle. I was totally obsessed with them.
Jacob: Yeah, same.
KP: It's obvious from your work! It was such a small bloop in video game history where these games came to be and it's so refreshing to get to experience Point and Click adventure games like we used it. It's so rare these days.
Jacob: You'd be surprised. There's a lot of people making really good point and click adventures out there. Some are more traditional, some less. If you want comedy stuff it's a little bit harder. There's really good drama ones. Some are surprisingly funny. Have you played any WadgetEye games? He makes his own games but he's also published a bunch of other good point and click games. They are surprisingly high quality, in the writing, a lot of them. There's Gemini Rue, which is a really good one.
KP: How did you get started working on games?
Jacob: I didn't get jobs so I had to make my own. I was a freelancer doing 2-D art and I was living with my parents. I found my skill set was not that indicative to the kind of jobs I thought were out there. I was trying to get fantasy card jobs. Trying to work for Magic: The Gathering. Stuff like that. Over time I figured out that writing comedy stuff and doing weird shit was way more what I was into and what hit people harder.
KP: So you were doing the art first and then got into creating video games?
Jacob: Yeah, initially it was an art project. For Uni I was just trying to turn every project into something I could use for my portfolio. We had a project where we had to make a big design booklet, a physical book. We could make it out of anything. So I was like, "I'll make a concept art book for a game. Initially it was a 2-D side scroller. I watched Indie Game: The Movie. Then I realized you could make point and click games without knowing programming. I found a program and I started making mock ups. I was just getting deeper and deeper into it without realizing how much time it would take. Which is a good thing because maybe I wouldn't have started if I knew.
